5 year health-iversary for managing familial hypercholesterolemia without drugs

5 year health-iversary for managing familial hypercholesterolemia without drugs I just realized that this August 2016 marks my five year anniversary of managing Familial Hypercholesterolemia without drugs. Woot! Yahoo!  Yippee!  I thought I'd jot down a quick: happy-5-year-health-iversary-to-me post to mark the occasion and celebrate something that once seemed impossible to achieve. I haven't done any of the typical Transformation Tuesday type posts before. In case this is new to you - these #transformationtuesday hashtag posts are usually motivating posts on blogs or social media by people on a health journey. They document the before and after pictures of someone who has had [...]

The best healthy salad dressing plus taking on the fear of good fats

This creamy healthy salad dressing adds a luscious mouthfeel while providing the necessary healthy fats that allows your body to better absorb the nutrients from your salad ingredients. The dressing is so versatile. It makes eating salad easy by binding together dry salad ingredients including greens, avocado, tomatoes, shredded carrots or beets, small tinned fishes (sardines, mackerel, anchovies), nuts etc. Another great way to use this is to spoon this beauty onto baked sweet potatoes or other baked root vegetables for an instantly gorgeous healthy lunch. It’s a staple in my house.

Healthy snacks: lemon coconut goji berry bliss balls

Healthy snacks: lemon coconut goji berry bliss balls Something I'm always asked about are ideas for healthy snacks. One of the first things I did when faced with the scary prospect of changing my eating habits, was figure out in advance what foods I could snack on with abandon. Personally I feel very comforted when I know I have food waiting in the wings that I can eat whenever I like. It's a psychological tool I find useful that invites feelings of abundance and plenty into the day. It also can help ward off uneasy feelings, like scarcity or denial, that commonly will arrive when [...]

Tomato pineapple red lentil recipe with coconut cumin sauce

Tomato pineapple red lentil recipe with coconut cumin sauce Whenever I have a craving for sweet and sour sauce, this is my go-to meal. It's deceptively simple, but amazingly addictive.  You get that perfect blend of salty and sweet - you know, the kind that food labs concoct to get us to eat more... of anything! Yet when you attack your plate repeatedly because you can't get enough of this, you're also doing your body a big favour. While technically a savoury meal, the pineapple and tomato paste work together to raise the sweetness profile until you just.can't.stop.eating.it. Every ingredient in this dish is a star in it's [...]

Blueberry muffins for happy arteries

Blueberry muffins for happy arteries I used to think I loved those regular muffins you find at most local coffee shops. But man, once I started researching how to eat for optimal health, I realised they were causing my body to consistently gain weight and be hormonally out of whack. A few years ago I began to explore what was possible when baking using superfoods and incredibly heart-healthy ingredients.  It's not muffins (as an art-form) that are bad, just a few of their ingredients. Suddenly a whole new world opened, and my baking was baaaack.   These blueberry banana muffins [...]
